2 Weeks Before Medicare Open Enrollment: Your 2027 Prep Checklist
Medicare Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs October 15 to December 7, 2026. Today is October 2. That leaves roughly two weeks to get your paperwork and lists in order so you are not scrambling on the first morning Plan Finder traffic spikes.
You do not need to enroll on October 15. You do need your Annual Notice of Change, a current drug list, and a short list of doctors and pharmacies before you compare anything seriously. This post is that prep checklist. The longer overview of dates and what you can change lives in Medicare Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage. The line-by-line ANOC read is in Your Medicare Annual Notice of Change for 2027.
I’m a researcher, not a licensed insurance agent. I link official Medicare pages and leave the plan choice to you and a free SHIP counselor.

Why these two weeks matter
Your plan should have mailed the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) in September, according to Medicare.gov’s ANOC page. The ANOC shows what changes on January 1. If you cannot find it, call the member services number on your plan card now—not on December 6.
Medicare.gov also notes that plans can market 2027 coverage and that Plan Finder shows 2027 plans starting around October 1. So you can practice comparisons before October 15. You just cannot complete an Open Enrollment switch until the window opens.
The pre–Open Enrollment folder
Gather these into one folder (paper or a single phone album). Twenty minutes now saves an hour of guessing later.

- ANOC and current Evidence of Coverage. Highlight 2027 premium, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximum (Advantage), and any note that a drug is moving tiers or needing prior authorization.
- Your drug list. Name, dose, how often you take it. Include insulin and note brand versus generic. Plan Finder estimates are only as good as this list.
- Doctors and facilities. Primary care, specialists you actually see, hospital you would use, and preferred pharmacy.
- 2026 costs that stung. Big copays, denied claims, long prior-authorization waits. Those are the traps to watch for in 2027 plans.
- Other coverage. Employer or union coverage, VA, TRICARE, Medicaid, Extra Help. Changing Medicare plans can interact with those benefits.
- Questions. Write three questions before you call SHIP or a plan. Examples: “Is Dr. Lee in network in 2027?” “Is my insulin on tier 2?” “What is the medical deductible?”
Days 1–5 (about Oct 2–7): read the ANOC, don’t enroll yet
Work through the six ANOC lines I use in the ANOC guide: premium, deductibles, your drugs, doctors and pharmacies, out-of-pocket maximum, and extras you use (dental, vision, hearing, OTC).
Watch for a nonrenewal or plan exit letter that is separate from a normal ANOC. A nonrenewal means the plan is leaving your area or ending. That is a different problem than a premium increase, and it can come with special enrollment options. If you get one, call SHIP the same week. (For a real-world example of a prior exit, see Clear Spring Health leaving Medicare Advantage.)
Also skim what is already confirmed for 2027 in Medicare changes for 2027: the Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400, the maximum Part D deductible rises to $700, and more drugs get negotiated prices. As of October 2, 2026, the 2027 Part B premium and deductible are not announced yet. Do not trust a blog that invents those numbers. Social Security’s COLA usually arrives mid-October; Part B figures often follow in the same season.

Days 6–12 (about Oct 8–14): dry-run Plan Finder
Use Medicare Plan Finder with your real drug list and pharmacy. Sort by total estimated yearly cost, not the monthly premium alone. Step-by-step screens: How to find the best Medicare plan in your area for 2027.
While you practice:
- Confirm each doctor and pharmacy still appears in network for 2027.
- Check whether your Advantage plan’s medical deductible or maximum out-of-pocket jumped.
- If you take insulin, confirm the plan shows the capped cost sharing you expect.
- If money is tight, run the Extra Help and Savings Program screens in parallel (Extra Help guide).

What you can change once the window opens
Between October 15 and December 7, Medicare.gov says you can join, drop, or switch a Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage), move from Original Medicare to Advantage or back again, and join, drop, or switch a stand-alone Part D plan if you have Original Medicare. Changes generally take effect January 1, 2027, if the plan gets your request by December 7.
If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you also get a second window later: the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31, 2027, when you can switch Advantage plans once or return to Original Medicare with a drug plan. That is a safety net, not a reason to skip the fall review.
October 15 onward: enroll when your comparison is done
When Open Enrollment opens, you can join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Advantage and Original Medicare, or change Part D if you have Original Medicare. Coverage you pick in this window generally starts January 1, 2027, if the plan receives your request by December 7.
A few guardrails from Medicare’s rules and from mistakes I see every year (Open Enrollment mistakes to avoid):
- Medigap is not in this window. Leaving Advantage for Original Medicare does not automatically get you Plan G or Plan N without underwriting unless you have a special right. Sort Medigap before you drop Advantage.
- You usually do not need to click Enroll on day one. A careful comparison in the first two weeks beats a panicked December 7 enrollment.
- If you get Extra Help or Medicaid, you may be able to change drug coverage more often than once a year. Ask SHIP how that works for you.
- Keep confirmation numbers and screenshots of the plan name, ID, and effective date.

FAQ
What if I never got an ANOC?
Call your plan. Medicare.gov says to contact the plan if you do not receive the notice. Also check spam folders and any online member portal. You can still use Plan Finder with your Medicare number and drug list.
Should I wait for the 2027 Part B premium before I compare?
You can compare Advantage and Part D plans now using Plan Finder and your ANOC. The Part B premium is separate and, as of October 2, 2026, not yet announced for 2027. When CMS publishes it, update your budget. It will not rewrite every Advantage drug list.
What if my plan is closing for 2027?
Keep the nonrenewal letter. Call SHIP promptly. You will have options to pick another plan during Open Enrollment and, in many cases, additional special enrollment rights. Do not ignore the letter because the ANOC “looked fine” last year.
Bottom line
Open Enrollment rewards preparation more than speed. Use the next two weeks to find your ANOC, write down your drugs and doctors, and practice Plan Finder. When October 15 arrives, you will be choosing, not guessing.
