Social Security Payments July 2026: 3 Checks & Exact Dates

By Margaret Collins

Mark your calendar: Social Security payments in July 2026 follow an unusual schedule, and about 2.5 million seniors will actually receive three checks this month. Two quirks collide: the July 4 holiday falls on a Saturday (observed Friday, July 3), shifting one payment date earlier — and August 1 also falls on a Saturday, pushing the August SSI payment back into July. Neither means extra money, but if you budget month to month, knowing exactly which deposit lands on which day prevents both panic and overspending. Here is the complete July 2026 payment calendar, who gets paid when, and what to do if your deposit does not arrive.

The Full July 2026 Payment Calendar

Social Security pays retirement, survivor, and disability benefits on Wednesdays according to your birth date — unless you fall into one of the special groups paid at the start of the month. SSI (Supplemental Security Income) pays on the 1st. Here is every July 2026 date:

DateWho Gets Paid
Wednesday, July 1SSI recipients (regular July payment)
Thursday, July 2Anyone receiving Social Security since before May 1997, and those who get both Social Security and SSI (moved up from Friday, July 3 — the observed holiday)
Wednesday, July 8Birthdays on the 1st–10th
Wednesday, July 15Birthdays on the 11th–20th
Wednesday, July 22Birthdays on the 21st–31st
Friday, July 31SSI recipients again — this is the August payment, arriving early because August 1 is a Saturday

Who Gets 3 Checks in July

The roughly 2.5 million people who receive both Social Security and SSI collect three deposits this month: SSI on July 1, Social Security on July 2, and the early August SSI payment on July 31. Standalone SSI recipients get two (July 1 and July 31). Everyone else gets their normal single payment. The critical budgeting point: the July 31 deposit is not a bonus — it is next month’s money arriving early. August itself will bring no SSI deposit, so that July 31 payment must stretch through August 31. Every year, benefits counselors see the same painful pattern: the “extra” check gets spent in early August’s first week, leaving a five-week gap. If you or a loved one receives both benefits, consider moving the July 31 deposit mentally (or literally, in a separate account) into August. If money is chronically tight, check whether a Medicare Savings Program or Extra Help for drug costs could free up $185+ per month — most eligible seniors never apply.

The July 4 Holiday Shift Explained

Federal rule: when a payment date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA pays on the preceding business day. Independence Day 2026 is Saturday, July 4, so the federal holiday is observed Friday, July 3. The group normally paid on the 3rd of each month — beneficiaries who started before May 1997 plus dual Social Security/SSI recipients — therefore gets paid Thursday, July 2. Birth-date Wednesday payments (July 8, 15, 22) are unaffected. Banks are closed Friday, July 3, so if you are watching for a paper check or a pending deposit, expect no movement until Monday, July 6.

One more planning note for couples: if you each receive benefits on different schedules — say one spouse on the pre-1997 track paid July 2 and the other paid by birth date on July 22 — July’s holiday shift can widen the gap between your two deposits to nearly three weeks. Aligning autopay dates for rent, utilities, and insurance with the later deposit avoids overdrafts in months like this. Most banks let you change autopay dates in a few minutes online, and utility companies will usually move your due date permanently if you call and ask.

2026 Payment Amounts Refresher

July payments reflect the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment that took effect in January 2026. The average retired-worker benefit is roughly $2,070 per month this year, while the maximum federal SSI amounts are $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple (some states add a supplement). Remember that the standard Part B premium of $202.90 is deducted from most Social Security checks before deposit — our COLA 2026 analysis breaks down how much of the raise Medicare absorbed, and early 2027 COLA projections preview what is next. If you are still working while collecting before full retirement age, the 2026 earnings test limits are $24,480 (under FRA all year) and $65,160 (reaching FRA in 2026).

If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive

SSA asks you to wait three additional mailing days before reporting a missing payment. In practice: first check your bank’s pending deposits and confirm your payment date against the calendar above (the July 2 shift and July 31 early SSI cause most “missing check” calls this month). Then verify your direct-deposit details in your my Social Security account at ssa.gov — account changes are the top cause of genuinely misdirected payments. Still missing after three business days? Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), weekdays 8 a.m.–7 p.m., or contact your local office. Never pay anyone who offers to “recover” or “expedite” a Social Security payment — that is always a scam; SSA services are free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I getting two SSI payments in July 2026?

Because August 1, 2026 falls on a Saturday, the August SSI payment is issued early, on Friday, July 31. It is your August money, not extra income — budget it across August, which will have no SSI deposit of its own.

Did my July payment come early because of July 4?

Only if you are in the group paid on the 3rd of each month — beneficiaries since before May 1997 or those receiving both Social Security and SSI. That payment moved to Thursday, July 2. Regular birth-date Wednesday payments (July 8, 15, 22) were not affected.

Which Wednesday am I paid on?

It follows your birth date: 1st–10th pays the second Wednesday (July 8), 11th–20th pays the third Wednesday (July 15), and 21st–31st pays the fourth Wednesday (July 22). Survivor and spousal benefits follow the birth date of the worker whose record pays the benefit.

Will the payment schedule change again in August 2026?

August Social Security payments fall on August 3 (pre-1997/dual group — Monday, a business day), and Wednesdays August 12, 19, and 26. There is no August SSI payment because it arrived July 31; the September SSI payment lands Tuesday, September 1.

How can I get payment dates sent to me automatically?

Create a free my Social Security account at ssa.gov — it shows your exact payment date, amount, and deposit account, and lets you set up alerts. SSA also publishes an annual payment calendar you can print and keep with your bills.
